Minnesota GED testing requirements

• You are not already holding a secondary education degree (high school or equivalent diploma).
• You do not follow some other educational program.
• In Minnesota, you must be at least 17 years old.
• For 17 and 18 year-olds, however, there are extra requirements such as having parental consent and permission from your school district.
• Minnesota does not require you to first take the GED Ready® Practice Test.
• Minnesota has no residency requirement.

Minnesota GED online

Students that want to take the Minnesota GED exam in an online proctored format must first attain "Likely To Pass" (green) results on the official GED Ready practice test. There is one GED Ready test per GED subtest, so four in total, that need to be purchased on the website GED.com at $6 each.

Students that take the Minnesota GED exam at a physical testing site are not required to first attain passing scores on the GED Ready test. This requirement only applies to online GED testing.

What's on the GED test?

The GED exam has four individual subtests (modules) that can be taken one at a time if wished. The four subtests are covering the subject areas of Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics.

GED scoring

The GED passing score for each of the four subtests is 145 on a 100-200 scale. You must reach this score on each subtest and averaging your scores is no option!

There are three passing score ranges: 145-164 is high school equivalency, 165-174 is college-ready, and 175-200 will also result in (up to 10) college credits.

Minnesota GED price

In  Minnesota, the total cost of the GED exam is $120 for all four subtests or $30 per module when you take the exam at one of Minnesota's testing sites. For a limited time, however, first-time GED test-takers can take the exam at no charge in Minnesota. Applicants need to have current Minnesota addresses or take the GED exam at a Minnesota testing site while living in a border town.

The online proctored (OP) exam will set you back $36 per sub-exam, so $144 for the entire GED battery. You should, however, also add the cost of four GED Ready tests ($24) which brings tour total online GED exam cost to $168!

How to register for the GED test

The GED exam has become totally computer-based and registration is also online via the portal MyGED. If you go to the GED organization's website GED.com, you will be conveniently taken through the entire process.

This is also the place for scheduling your tests and paying for the test(s) you want to take. You just pay for the section(s) you take, no need to pay for everything at one time!

How to prepare for the GED test

You can sign up for a prep class at your local community college and there are also numerous other sites that provide GED prep classes, often at no cost at all. Your community library or your r local book store will also have plenty of GED prep materials ready for you to use.
